Proverbs 23
I have worked in and around the alcohol industry for over a decade so I am not one to shy away from the realities of the dark side of the drink.
This portion of Proverbs 23 is a clear indication that wine* is not the answer [*insert your drink/drug of choice].
Some days it feels like it, God knows I’ve been there.
Personally I have been struggling with a LOT of headaches/migraines again during this pregnancy and the first thing I have to remind myself is that I can’t reach for a take-the-edge-off drink. Thankfully my husband is a gem and decided early on in the pregnancy to also abstain from alcohol for all of 2021 alongside me, which has been such a blessing of accountability.
The thing is, there is no “winning” immoderate and unrestrained ab/use of alcohol or drugs. I’m sure we’ve all seen too often how anything past moderation is a bad idea.
Maybe we all need to read this passage of scripture the next time we reach for a drink. --- Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaining? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes? Those who tarry long over wine; those who go to try mixed wine. Do not look at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup and goes down smoothly. In the end it bites like a serpent and stings like an adder. Your eyes will see strange things, and your heart utter perverse things. You will be like one who lies down in the midst of the sea, like one who lies on the top of a mast. “They struck me,” you will say, “but I was not hurt; they beat me, but I did not feel it. When shall I awake? I must have another drink.” Proverbs 23:29-35 | ESV
